That’s right! An apple with caramel baked in the middle.
Does that sound good or what?
Well, it is!
I made this creation while we were camping in Teton National Park back in June. I was fiddling with different campfire desserts and this genius idea struck me as an apple and some caramels sat on the picnic table. I love caramel apples and I thought I would experiment and see what would happen if I sliced an apple, put some caramels in the middle, wrapped it in some aluminum foil and tossed it into the campfire.
What happened was the creation of a delicious campfire dessert.
Here’s how to create this yumminess in foil.
- Use an apple slicer and slice the apple. I prefer crisp apples like Fuji or Gala.
- Place the apple without the core on 2 sheets of aluminum foil. Put the slices back into the apple shape.
- Place squares of caramels in the middle of the apple and fold the foil around the apple.
- Place your foil apple ball into the campfire coals and let bake for 8-10 minutes.
- Remove carefully from the coals and let the aluminum foil cool for a few minutes.
- Unwrap the foil and dig in. You’ll have a delicious baked apple with a melted caramel center.
This is not the best depiction of the Outside In Caramel Apple. It’s the only picture I have. Probably should have left it to your imagination, huh? 😉
YUM!!!
You can add additional ingredients to the center such as nuts, chocolate or peanut butter. You can also use cut up candy bars like Caramel Milky Way, Rolos, peanut butter cups or whatever suits your fancy.
What cha think? Wanna try it? What ingredients would you add?
Hi, Thanks for sharing this. One question regarding the caramels – what sort of caramels are you referring to? The hard and chewy lolly-like ones? Or is it something soft and squishy?
This could be a case of Australian terminology vs. US terminology eg. your ‘cookies’ are our ‘biscuits’.
I do love gooey caramel, so this does sound yum!
They are the chewy soft-squichy caramels, not the hard candies. Let me know if you try it out. 🙂
Can’t find soft caramels! All are hard. Spent some quality time looking in confectionery aisle today, and came up empty handed!! 🙁
Email me your address. Maybe I can send some to you. 🙂 melissa(at)adventuretykes(dot)com
What a great idea. Sounds delicious and real simple to make. I’ll be giving it a go the next chance I get.
Thanks! Let me know if you do try and what you think. It is delicious and simple. 🙂
Will try this at our next family camping trip in July. Sounds yummy!
