Tuesdays Tip of the Day: Sunscreen EVEN in the Winter

Yesterday J-Man and I went snowshoeing with some friends up in the La Sal Mountains here in Moab. It was a beautiful sunny day and much warmer in the mountains compared to town due to the inversion we are having.

I packed our jackets, hot cocoa, water, backpacks, hats, sunglasses, snowshoes, trekking poles, snacks and everything else we needed except one thing and that is what prompted me to write this post.

Here is a reminder that even though it is winter SUNSCREEN is still needed. I know this, but since we haven’t been out in sunny weather lately, I totally forgot to slather it on J-man’s face. The sunscreen is in the closet out of sight and out of mind, therefore, I totally spaced it.

It seriously didn’t even occur to me that I had forgotten sunscreen on him until after his nap and he woke up with bright red cheeks, nose and forehead. Yeah, I feel like a horrible mom. Thank goodness it doesn’t bother him, but it certainly bothers me.

So the next time you head outside with your tykes for some outdoor playtime, please make sure you smear some sunscreen on them.

You don’t want their cheeks to turn out like this…

Thank goodness we have some SkinFare to heal them.

Here is my favorite sunscreen we use.

Have you ever forgotten to put sunscreen on your tyke and it resulted in a sunburn? Have you done something similar?

  1. Jennifer Teece says:

We never fail to forget to put on sunscreen during our 1st winter hiking excursion, even though the sunscreen is packed in our winter gear bag (with lip balm and lotion to sooth skin from the cold). So after this year’s sunburn we wrote: USE THIS! on the sunscreen tube. We’ve been good the rest of this winter, but the real test will come during our 1st hike NEXT winter.

  2. I have indeed forgotten sunscreen before, usually in the spring time when we do our first longer and higher hikes. We also just started doing winter hiking/snowshoeing after some friends gave us all snowshoes last month. I have found that I really don’t want to get the sunscreen out and slather it on when we are at the trailhead gearing up and it’s 24 degrees and windy. So I need to remember to put it on before we leave the house, if I can manage to do that while packing the kids and the car and everything else.
